The Yanks Are Coming (to teach you Irish music)

Sept 16, 2015 by Jeff Ksiazek

The Irish Fest School of Music is excited to welcome New York-based band, The Yanks, to teach Irish music workshops on Saturday, November 7, 2015. Each band member will teach a 90 minute workshop starting at 2pm:

  • Irish Fiddle with Dylan Foley
  • Button Accordion with Dan Gurney
  • Irish Guitar and Bouzouki with Sean Earnest
  • Irish Flute and Tin Whistle with Isaac Alderson

These musicians have been on my radar for some time. Isaac put out a craic-induced set of flute tunes on the third volume of Wooden Flute Obsession before I saw him sub with Bua at their ICHC show back in 2007. Sean Earnest has been at Milwaukee Irish Fest as McPeake's guitarist back in 2011 and continues to create unique and tasteful accompaniment on guitar and bouzouki. Dylan and Dan have been part of the East Coast scene for years as well (and have just released a duo album as well).

The Yanks have already released two CDs that I've had on heavy rotation for a while now (their 2013 debut and 2014's double disc Haymaker), and they've all had extensive experience teaching at places like the Catskills Irish Arts Week and Elkins Irish Week. Considering that a couple band members have been the first Americans to win their categories in the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann since the like of Joanie Madden and Brian Conway, I think Irish music students will be in great hands at these workshops and will learn a lot to improve their playing!

The workshops cost $40 and attendees also get access to a special $12 ticket to their concert that night (ticket price at the door is $20). The Yanks concert starts at 8pm the night of Saturday, November 7.
