Irish Singing Workshop
Open to adults and teenagers
Cost: $18.00 per class
Instructor: Brian Ó hAirt
Location: CelticMKE Center (formerly the Milwaukee Irish Fest Center)
This workshop will serve as an introduction to the many singing styles and traditions of Ireland. From ballad traditions to the lyrical songs of the sean-nós traditions, students will be exposed to many song forms from both the Irish and English languages. Particular focus will be given to cultivating the 'natural' voice while also building confidence for singing solo. Ornamentation and phrasing will be explored as well as understanding the natural poetics found in a song's lyrics. Lyrics will be supplied but the majority of songs will be learning in a call-and-response manner. Please bring a recording device.
Students must pay a $12 administrative fee for individuals or $24 per family of two or more each semester, due on the first day of class. See our policies for more details.
Brian Ó hAirt is an All-Ireland Champion singer. He performs with his award-winning ensemble Bua based in Chicago, Illinois as well as with renowned singing legend Len Graham of Co. Antrim. He has a wide store of knowledge about these traditions as well as a vast repertoire of songs from both the ballad singing traditions of Ulster as well as from the sean-nós singing communities of Conamara in West Galway and Muskerry in West Cork. His style utilizes complex ornamentation, a keen sense of phrasing, and focuses on the poetics intrinsic to the languages of English and Irish.
