Fiddle Around the World – American, Nordic, and Irish Fiddle Class
Round 1: $100 for four 1 hour class sessions (*plus School semester admin fee)
January 7, 2019: American Fiddle with Susan Nicholson, 7 to 8pm
January 14, 2019: Nordic Fiddle with Vidar Skrede, 7 to 8pm
January 21, 2019: Irish Fiddle with Maria Terres, 7 to 8pm
January 28, 2019: Joint fiddle group discussion/jam with Susan, Vidar, and Maria, 7 to 8pm
Location: CelticMKE Center Great Hall
Take a trip around the world and explore American, Nordic, and Irish fiddle styles with three of the Milwaukee area’s best instructors. Each week this rotating class will introduce you to stylistic elements of these fiddle traditions and will finish with a multi-style group discussion and jam session.
Round 2 may be available based on student demand.
Open to adult fiddle students (teens accepted with permission of instructor) who are new to folk music but are comfortable playing their instrument.
Recommended Prerequisite Skills:
- Scales: D major, G major, A major
- Basic bowing proficiency
Minimum enrollment: 3 students.

Susan Nicholson - American Fiddle
Frogwater originally formed in 1997 from the collaboration of John and Susan Nicholson, having both been in Milwaukee's formative ensemble, The Ghillies. Susan's repertoire spans from Celtic to Delta Blues and American Old-Time, and her innovative interpretations of traditional tunes span the centuries and defy categorization.
Vidar Skrede - Nordic Fiddle
Vidar Skrede (from Haugesund, Norway) is a freelance Nordic folk musician on guitar, harding fiddle, fiddle and Greek bouzouki. He has a background in the traditional music from Rogaland (South West of Norway), and has a master degree in Nordic folk music at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm.
Maria Terres - Irish Fiddle
A three-time All-Ireland qualifier on fiddle and senior céilí band, Maria has taught fiddle to all ages since 1986. She plays for céilí and set dancers (with Cream City Céilí Band and Rare Privilege) and New England Contra dancing. Maria is a feis musician, a national workshop instructor, and a versatile studio musician with multiple recordings. She has been a music director, composer, and performer for the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.
