Beginning Concertina Workshop
Open to adults and teenagers
Time TBD based on demand
Instructor: Brian Ó hAirt
Location: CelticMKE Center (formerly the Milwaukee Irish Fest Center)
This class will focus on building fundamental skills for concertina playing. These basic skills include standard and alternate fingering systems for our most common scales, how to effectively use the bellows to create lift in the music, and basic ornaments like cuts, double stops, and octaves to lend sophistication to one's playing. For absolute beginners, we will also focus on how to hold a concertina and adjust its hand straps. We'll internalize these skills by way of learning common dance tunes such as jigs, reels, hornpipes, and marches. A portion of this class will be set aside for listening to examples of concertina music from around Ireland. It is highly recommended that students bring a recording device, as music will be learned "by ear."
Students must pay a $12 administrative fee for individuals or $24 per family of two or more each semester, due on the first day of class. See our policies for more details.
Brian Ó hAirt's style is informed by the concertina traditions of County Clare. Drawing inspiration from older concertina dialects featured in early recordings, his playing utilizes a wide range of ornamentation while including techniques pulled from the piping tradition. Brian is also a sean-nós dancer and musician on button accordion and aims to engage both the dancer's and the listener's feet by generating lift and pulse through phrasing and bellows work.
